Keynote: "From Silos to Arsenal: Authentic Learning Needs to Start Now"
Our current system of education continues to replicate a model crafted in 1894 by "The Committee of Ten." What students "needed" to learn in 1894 has vastly changed over the past 122 years; however, our schools still work as silos. We separate learning into content areas with the hope that students connect the dots. We separate students by age with the hope that they eventually mentor one another. We separate teachers into departments with the hope that they collaborate and make connections within the curriculum.

Careers today are a blend of disciplines; yet, schools continue to teach content in isolation away from true application of knowledge and practice of skills. Let's acknowledge the silos and allow students and teachers to see outside of the barriers we have arbitrarily created. We can achieve this through vertical stratification and horizontal stratification. We can achieve this by ending the turf wars over content within our schools. We can do this by handing kids more agency in their learning. We can do this by helping students create an infinite canvas of their learning journey.

Let's break down the silos and provide our future generations the arsenal they need now through authentic learning experiences, where students have agency and choice to create their true identity in our world today.

ManageBac at Hong Kong Academy
Hong Kong Academy is in its fifth year of using ManageBac to document curriculum in the MYP and DP as well as to report on student progress in both programmes. One of the strengths of implementation has been the partnership that has developed between the areas of education and operations; this collaboration has allowed us to leverage ManageBac as a tool that can transform our understanding of teaching practices at HKA. During this session, the school's Director of Technology and MYP Coordinator will share structures and approaches to conversations that have been used to nurture this relationship and will provide examples of data that have been used to guide instructional decisions in the secondary school.

Session 2: Rethinking DP for Curriculum Planning
Do you have DP teachers that still think of ManageBac as “that CAS website”? With the introduction of example unit planners for DP when the Approaches to Learning site was launched in January 2015, more schools are rethinking how unit planning can be used to capture and map ATL experiences, incorporate CAS within subject teaching and learning, and embed TOK links deeper into lesson plans. With recent DP curriculum reviews emphasising conceptual skill development, effective unit planning assists with building these skills and providing evidence for IB standards and practices. This session will outline recent changes to ManageBac that align with IB recommendations and aim to help participants rethink how DP unit planning is taking place at their school.

Session 2: Leveraging Khan Academy for a New Learning Design
The Khan Lab School has been founded to develop fully empowered future citizens by pioneering models that put the learner at the center of the education experience. With this in mind we hope to develop and test new types of learning experiences and practices that can be shared for free with the world.

The first school will be scaled in Silicon Valley and the vision inter alia is to create a global network of Khan Lab Schools in collaboration with Khan Academy. This challenge is at the intersection of education and technology encompassing a great character of social responsibility and is an exciting start-up experience in Silicon Valley.

The learning design is based with the student in the center on four interdisciplinary elements including Approaches to Learning (ATL), Architecture of Learning (AOL), Art of Teaching (AOT) and Academic and Character Outcomes (ACO).

The main focus is to apply content in context leveraging project based, blended and personalized learning within a mastery based framework.

In this breakout session we compare the KLS vision with the IB framework and looking at the parallels and opportunities.

Keynote: "Designing for Learning in the Second Machine Age"

Apex International Academy and Innova Academy are two new schools planning to open in August 2017, challenging themselves to reimagine education in the ‘Second Machine Age’ by designing engaging physical and virtual environments that support forward thinking pedagogies.

Through achieving a balanced ‘learning ecosystem’, we aspire to realize personalized learning experiences where ‘learners pursue their interests, create meaningful products and take on responsibility for their own learning’. In this environment, learners and teachers will be connected and engaged with each other and, global communities and resources. In doing so, they will ultimately develop entrepreneurial confidence and digital competencies.

An essential goal of our Collaborative Online Learning Environment (COLE) is to effectively support the social and educational needs of individual learners and to allow teachers to provide personal guidance, so that learners are properly challenged, supported, and mentored on their learning journeys.

“Ultimately, we aspire to harness the unique qualities and strengths of both human beings and technology to transform learning’ and engage the next generation of passionate, confident and caring individuals."

Our presentation explores how we are setting about to create the virtual environment to support our vision.

ATL and the Learning Revolution

When all the information in the world is available at the fingertips of every student then the key skills needed for success both academically and in the world of business and enterprise will be the skills of the self-regulated learner. At that point the development of self-regulated (self-managed, self-directed, independent, autonomous) learners will become the primary focus of schooling which will require all forms of transmission teaching to be replaced by process oriented, skills based, teaching. The ATL curriculum at both the MYP and DP levels has been designed with this idea in mind because this is not the future, this is now.

This presentation will focus on how the successful design and implementation of an ATL programme in any school could revolutionise teaching and learning, improve academic success rates and give all students the skills they need to create success for themselves in the 21st Century.

Assessment in the DP aims to develop skills and understanding across the range of subject groups. Effective assessment in any teaching programme blends both the summative tasks needed for reporting progress at certain stages as well as formative assessment to inform and improve teaching and learning for all students.

This session will outline how each of these can be planned and implemented using ManageBac as well as demonstrating how to configure grade scales and category weightings specific to your school. We will also show how to provide feedback directly to students within ManageBac using comments and integration with Crocodoc as well as how to use Turnitin directly with assignment submission.

Session 3: Courage, Resilience and Failing Well
Resilience is one of the five sub-categories in the Affective skills Cluster of the MYP ATL skills along with the skills of Mindfulness, Emotional Management, Self-Motivation and Perseverance. These skills (attributes, characteristics) are probably the most significant of all the ATL skills in helping children to cope with the pressures and stresses of high achievement schooling at all levels of the IB and yet these are the least taught skills possibly because most teachers don’t know how.

This workshop will focus particularly on the importance of teaching students how to deal well with failure as a significant component of developing resilience and of achieving academic success and will reveal several ways that all Affective skills can be taught.

Genius Bar #12
Please note that Sessions 1-4 run by Speakers will have a ManageBac Associate available to assist with ManageBac-related questions that may arise during the session.

The introduction of the Genius Bar is an opportunity to ask questions specific to your school that you would prefer to discuss privately with a ManageBac Associate.

There are a total of 14 Genius Bars available throughout the 2 days. Each 15-minute session is limited to one registration per school (or group of schools if you are happy to share your time).

Opening of registration for the Genius Bars will be announced during Saturday morning's Welcoming Remarks".

To signup, please assign one representative from your school (or group of schools) to visit Betty Cheng or Julia Tsai at the registration desk. Specify your School Name and preferred Genius Bar timeslot.

Note: Adding this to your Schedule via Sched.org will not automatically register you for this session. You must personally signup at the registration desk.
